믿음의 도리
우연히 아파트 입구의 우편함에 수없이 꽂혀있는 '믿음의 도리'라 적혀 있는 한 교회의 홍보 전단을 목격하였다. 그러나 이상하게도 이 전단들은 금방 사라져버리고 없었다. 혹시나 해서 재활용 종이 쓰레기통을 뒤져보니 그 안에 모조리 들어가 있었다. 아파트 경비아저씨는 그저 이 전단들이 성가신 모양이다. 아니면 입주자들로 하여금 지저분한 전단을 목격하도록 내버려두지 말고 치워야 한다는 암묵적이고 강박적인 실천적 직업의식으로부터 비롯되었을 것이다. 아마도 경비아저씨는 그것을 성스러운 믿음의 도리로 받아들였다기보다는 그저 도리를 지키지 않는 이 성스러울법한 전단에 상스러움을 느낀 것 같다. 이 전단을 아파트의 모든 우편함에 가득 투입한 어떤 절실한 종교인은 분명히 믿음의 도리를 다한다는 믿음 즉 하늘(신)의 뜻에 부합하는 신념으로 조심스레 전단을 삽입했을지도 모른다. 그 종교인에게는 이 전단마저 신성한 매개물일 것이다. 이처럼 우편함에 가득 꽂힌 특정 종교의 전단을 매개로 믿음의 도리라는 글귀의 개념에 관한 진지한 사유가 시작되었다.
'믿음의 도리'라는 글귀의 '도리'란 단어는 국어 사전적 정의에 의하면 '마땅히 행하여야 할 바른 길' 정도로 상당히 강제성을 띠고 있는 것을 알 수 있다. 영어사전에서도 마찬가지이다. '의무' 혹은 '임무', '직무' 등으로 대체될 수 있는 'Duty'가 적당하다 할 수 있을 것이다. 이처럼 도리란 짧은 단어에 주어진 개념은 결코 가볍지 않다. 오히려 무겁고 강압적이라 느껴질 정도이다.
전단은 믿는다면 도리를 지키라 하고 있다. 무교인 일반인 입장에서 이 글귀는 더욱 강압적으로 생각되어 폭력적이기까지 했다. 현관 문 앞에 광고물 부착금지라 써 붙여 놓았어도 어느 새 또 붙여진 여느 광고 전단의 질긴 인연처럼이나 짜증스러운 마음이 들 수도 있는 순간이라 여겨진다. 심지어는 잘 살고 있는 나를 죄인으로 만들기도 하며 전단에 붙어있는 사탕 한 개와 인스턴트커피 한 봉으로 유혹하기도 한다. 결국 전단은 휴지조각이 되어 쓰레기통으로 향할 운명이겠지만, 세상 어디에서나 사람들은 도리를 지키며 사느라 이 시간도 애를 쓰고 있다.
이렇게 우연한 순간 마주하게 된 이 한 종교의 전단에서 비롯된 도리란 단어는 과연 오늘날의 시대적, 사회적, 개인적 상황이 도리를 다하고 있는 것인가란 물음에 당면하게 만들었다. 오늘날 그 도리란 참으로 무거운 동시에 가벼울 수 있는 대상이다. 혹자에게는 성스러운 말씀 일 수도 있겠지만, 다른 자에게는 공허한 울림일 수도 있을 것이다. 복잡하고 다양해진 현재 우리의 삶 속에서 때때로 종교는 근본적 성격으로 성스러움과 신앙 이면에 세속적인 삶 자체가 주는 고단함과 버거움 속에서 이율배반적인 작용을 하는 것처럼 여겨진다. 이러한 성스럽고도 세속적인 종교라는 형식을 빌려 작업을 진행하면서 종교 혹은 사회적 이념 등의 위상과 허상을 알 수 있게 되었다.
세상의 어떤 같은 사물이나 이치를 바라보는 시각은 천차만별일 것이다. 세상의 모든 일들이 언제나 내가 바라는 대로 이루어지지 않듯이 말이다. 믿음의 도리란 단어가 적힌 전단이 내게 수많은 생각이 들게 했듯, 현 시대 상황에 맞는 이러한 공통되지만 다른 가치를 지닌 대상들을 찾아 나서게 되었다.

Duty of Faith
I came across with innumerable amounts of promotional flyers of a church, written “duty of faith,” inserted in the mailboxes at the apartment entrance. However, these flyers strangely disappeared and were gone in no time. I got curious so I rummaged through the paper-recycling bin and found them all in there. It seems that to the janitor, these flyers are simply annoying. Or, perhaps, it came from the implicit and compulsive practical work ethic; driving him to get rid of the messy flyers and not letting them be witnessed by the residents. I believe that rather than embracing them as holy duties of faith, he must have sensed vulgarity towards these oughtto-be-holy flyers that are not keeping up with their duties. The earnest believer who had put these flyers in all of the apartment’s mailboxes was clearly carefully inserting the flyers with the belief that he/she was doing all of his/her duty, that is, the conviction that correspond to God’s will. Even these flyers are, to the believer, probably sacred mediums. This is how thinking in earnest about the concept of the phrase, “duty of faith”, carried by flyers of a certain religion filling in the mailboxes, began.
It is noticeable that the word ‘duty’ from the phrase, “duty of faith”, partakes considerable amount of forcefulness to the extent that it means ‘the right way which must be done as a matter of course’ according to the Korean dictionary definition. It is the same with the English dictionary. ‘Obligation’, ‘mission’, ‘job’, etc would be adequately substituted with ‘duty.’ The concept given to the brief word ‘duty’ is by no means light. Rather, it feels heavy and coercive.
The flyers states, if you believe, follow your duty. From a stance of a none-religious person, this phrase was considered more coercive to the extent that it was abusive, even. Like the tenacious relationship with any other ordinary advertisement flyers that get posted without notice, despite posting ‘no advertisements allowed’ in front of the entrance door, it can be one of those moments that make you feel irritated. What is worse is that they turn me, who is living in content without any problems, into a sinner and, also, seduce me with a candy and a pack of instant coffee stuck to the flyer. Although the flyer will eventually be destined to become a piece of wastepaper and head toward the trash bin, even at this very moment in every parts of the world, people are striving to keep up with their duties.
The word ‘duty’, derived from a certain religion I had come to encounter with at a moment of chance, enabled me to confront with the question: Are the periodical, social and individual circumstances of today doing their best in terms of duty? Today, this duty is a subject that can be very heavy, and, at the same time, light. To some, it may be a word of sanctity, but to others, it may be an empty resonance. It seems that religion within our present lives, which have become complicated and diverse, is, at times, acting in antinomy within sanctity as its basic character, and the weariness and unwieldiness given by the secular life itself at the hidden side of the religious belief. As I began working with forms borrowed from such holy yet secular religion, I have become aware of the status and the delusions of religion or social ideologies, etc.
There will be all sorts of different ways of seeing certain objects or reasons of the world. It is as if everything in the world never ever happen in the way I want them to. As the flyer written with the word “duty of faith” made me think about the many things, I have come to search for objects that possess such common yet different values coinciding with situations of the present times.
